Why do women get epidurals if labor is excruciating with or without it?

You can become paralyzed if they mess up, and my friend just told me it even slows down labor! Everyone I know that's given birth and had an epidural says giving birth is unimaginably horrifyingly painful and getting the epidural is even more painful. So why get the shot if it doesn't make labor any less painful and the shot itself is even worse??? Are there any other methods of numbing the pain? I can't imagine giving birth without an epidural but I'm actually considering skipping it after all I've heard!

Contractions, pressure, early labor?

It's pretty normal. I actually started to dilate at 34 weeks. The doctors didn't see any problem. My daughter was born on her due date. The pains are very normal in the last couple of months. Because of the pressure on your rectum your going to have a lot of bowel movements. The contractions could be baton hicks. But trust me you'll know when you're in true labor

Why do road bicyclists ride with their seat so high?

I've noticed that cyclists ride with their seats really high - above the handlebars. What is the purpose of this? My seat is just even with my handlebars (and my leg is fully extended on the down peddle). Does this mean that my bike is too big?
