What was martin luther king trying to achieve?

I find it interesting that Martin Luther King's philosophy was influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, who in turn was influenced by Leo Tolstoy. Much of Tolstoy's/Gandhi's/King's philosophy lives on in the political theology of Christian anarchism.
